Common Problems with Stainless Steel Fasteners

Although stainless steel fasteners are highly corrosion resistant, improper installation can still cause problems such as galling, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking.

Galling usually happens when stainless steel threads generate excessive friction during tightening. To prevent this issue, lubrication and controlled installation speed are recommended.

Crevice corrosion may occur in chloride-rich environments where oxygen access is limited. Choosing the correct stainless steel grade and proper surface finishing are important solutions.
